Thirthahalli is a taluk in Shivamogga district. It lies in the banks of the river Tunga. Thirthahalli is known for green, rainfall, simple lives of malnad people and also malnad food recipes. Thirthahalli as a tourist place is famous for nature photography, where every photographer wants to click photos of the beautiful malnad region. It is also famous for the ‘Tunga Bridge’ or ‘Thirthahalli Bridge’ or ‘Jayachamarajendra Bridge’.

Thirthahalli History:

According to a Hindu legend, the sage Parashurama beheaded Renuka’s head with an axe on the orders of his father, the great sage Jamadagni. Parashurama tried to wash the blood stains off the axe by dipping it in various rivers, but a sesame-sized blood stain remained on his axe until he dipped his axe in the Tunga River near Thirthahalli.

This place is now called Parashurama Thirtha and is the origin of the name Thirthahalli.  This legend has made Thirthahalli a holy place for Hindus, who believe that a dip in the river Tunga will cure one of all sins.

Tunga River water is considered as the sweetest water in the world. Hence the saying “Ganga Snana Tunga Paana”. Means take bath in river Ganga which purifies the body, drink river Tunga which purifies your soul.

Thirthahalli Tunga Bridge is one of the oldest bridge constructed across river Tunga. Yes! Tunga bridge is over 75years old and it was designed and built under the supervision of  Bharata Ratna Sir M Vishweswaraya. The bridge connects Kuruvalli & Thirthahalli.

One has to definitely visit this place to see the uniqueness of the bridge, which is one of the oldest bridges in Malnad region.

It attracts many visitors, especially on weekends. It is one of the sightseeing places near Shivamogga. It is advisable to visit during  monsoon

Bridge Structure:

The bridge has an arc-like structure at the top which is supported by consecutive pillars on either side of the bridge. There is a beam-like structure roof.

The bridge is also called ‘Jayachamarajendra bridge’ as the bridge was inaugurated by Maharaja of Mysore Shri Jayachamarajendra Wadeyar in 1943.
