Bhadravathi is commonly known for MPM & VISL factories located in the town. But also a 13th century Shri Lakshmi Narasimha temple is situated in Bhadravathi. Shri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple Bhadravathi is of Hoysala architecture and belonged to Hoysala kingdom.

Lakshmi Narasimha temple is a Hindu temple, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Lord Narasimha was known as the protector of humankind & destroyer of Evil spirits.

The architecture of the temple is superb and worth noting. You cannot see any tall and highly carved gopuram in this temple, as seen in many other temples, but the walls of the temple are beautifully designed.

The temple that is located in the Old Town area of Bhadravathi is now maintained by the Archaeological Department of Karnataka State.

History of Shri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple Bhadravathi:

There is a popular myth related to the formation of small-town Bhadravathi. It is believed that Varaha (avatar of Lord Vishnu) rescues Bhudevi, Goddesses of earth, She was kidnapped by a demon called Hiranyaksha. When Varaha lifted earth from his two tusks, river Tunga & Bhadra were formed. Hence the town Bhadravathi.

There is another story related to Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple from Mahabharata.Following the battle of Kurukshetra, Arjuna asks Lord Krishna the means by which he could atone the sin of killing his own kith and kin in the war. Krishna suggests that the mere darshan of Lord Laksminarasimha at Vankipura would enable the atonement.

Temple comes in a triple form, known as Vimana, where 3 shrines facing south, north & west. Soapstone is used to build this temple. There is a specified path known as ‘Pradakshina path’ which is a form of Hoysala Architecture. The temple also has special pillars, known as Lathe pillars along with parapets. This style defines the architecture of 11th & 13th century Hoysala architecture.

The artistic design of this temple is constructed in such a manner, which makes the temple stands on Jagati. The outer area of this temple comprises of two tier decoration, and located inside is the idol of Lord Vishnu’s incarnation, Lord Narasimha. Just like the temple, the idol of Lord Vishnu was also stated to be 800 years old. There are some images of Ganesha, Purushottama, Sri Krishna and Sharadamba, which enhances the beauty of this place more.

Temple opens at 6 am & closes at 9 pm. There are no days like holidays. The temple is well maintained by Archaeological dept of India.

Festival celebration at Shri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple Bhadravathi:

Dasara, Navaratri & Vaikunta Ekadashi is celebrated in the temple with special pooja. There is no such thing as lunch & dinner at this temple, but Prasada is offered after daily pooja.


During this festival, the iconic deity of Lord Narasimha is taken round the city in a grand procession. This festival takes place at the Hindu month of Ashvin, which is anytime between September and October.
Navaratri Festival:

This festival is celebrated with great pomp and glamour at the temple complex. This festival generally takes place couple of times in a year. Once anytime between March-April and another time between September-October.

Vaikunta Ekadasi:

This is the 11th day of the waxing moon in the Hindu month of Magh and an auspicious day for the Vaishnavaite cult. Worship attains a different dimension here, on this day. This festival generally takes place anytime between December and January.

How to reach:

It is a very easy way to reach this temple as it is well connected by road n railways. There are many buses from Bangalore to Shimoga &  Mysore to Shimoga which passes via Bhadravathi.

Train facility is also good as the trains from Bangalore, Mysore to Shivamogga Passes through Bhadravathi. One can also get down in Birur & catch a bus to Bhadravathi as there are much more trains to Birur junction.

Nearest airports are; Hubballi Domestic Airport which is at 8a distance of 170kms & the other is Mangalore International Airport which is at a distance of 140kms.
